Stratecast | Frost & Sullivan Recognizes the Contribution of Wind River’s Cloud-Based Platform to the Advancement of Next-generation Support Systems for the Internet of Things

Wind River Helix Device Cloud collects and manages data from devices and machines to raise operational visibility and intelligence

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — September 1, 2015 — Based on its recent analysis of the operations management of emerging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, Stratecast | Frost & Sullivan recognizes Wind River® with the 2015 Global Stratecast | Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Award. Wind River, a provider of operating systems, software platforms and development tools, is helping drive all aspects of the emerging IoT infrastructure with Wind River Helix Device Cloud.

Wind River has a broad customer base that includes companies from diverse industries such as communications, aerospace and defense, automotive, industrial and medical. The company has expanded beyond its original real-time operating system business and has moved up the stack of the IoT chain.  It is addressing a massive opportunity to enable and secure the IoT as connectivity becomes ubiquitous, and embedded devices dominate critical networking infrastructures. Wind River was acquired by Intel® in 2009 and is part of Intel’s Internet of Things Group.

“Leveraging its more than 30 years of embedded leadership, and role as a pioneer in the Internet of Things, Wind River has stepped up to support a new kind of interconnectedness where millions of new devices will not just connect to the network, but share data with other devices and machines,” said Stratecast | Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Tim McElligott.“Device Cloud will be one of the most immediate requirements for the IoT to become a reality. Wind River’s strategy, products and partnerships all show real innovation in support of the future of businesses across market segments.”

Wind River stands out for executing a cloud-based platform for device management that allows organizations to quickly, securely, and efficiently unlock machine data by connecting to IT networks and analytics environments, helping improve operational efficiencies and boosting strategic insights. Device Cloud additionally enables a rich set of device-side actuation capabilities to close the loop of that actionable insight, through a control plane that is separate from the data plane. Competitors have rarely taken an embedded technology approach to edge and device management; they still rely on software and hardware probes in the network to gather data. Device Cloud is an integral part of the Intel IoT Platform.

With Device Cloud, Wind River is taking a next-generation systems approach to address the enterprise market in its use of representational state transfer-conforming (RESTful) application programming interfaces (APIs). Such APIs help developers or enterprises themselves create vertical-specific IoT solutions and integrate disparate IT systems. Other features include:

  • Remote device management and diagnostics across networks;
  • On-device security that supports white listing and data integrity protection; and
  • Remote capture of sensor and system health data for IoT.

For its overall IoT focus and innovation, Stratecast is pleased to present Wind River with the 2015 Stratecast Global Technology Innovation Award for Operations Management of Emerging IoT Technologies.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated uniqueness in developing and leveraging new technologies that significantly impact both the functionality and the customer value of the new products and applications. The award lauds the high R&D spend toward innovation, its relevance to the industry and the positive impact on brand perception.
